The objective for this project was waste elimination in a workflow that typically results in abundant wasted material. Hot wire foam cutting with a 6 axis robot arm has endless procedural opportunities, but the challenge was to design an assembly that uses as much of the original stock as possible rather than discarding exorbitant amounts of it. The final solution used every single piece of stock, with an effective zero waste result. The proposed assembly is a tiling wall installation with contoured texturing, which brings out the material properties and responds to daylight in a beautiful and visually pleasing way. The future of this work is continued study of possible operations with the robot cutting workflow.
